Came across this wonderful little gadget . It shows the level of gas in a cylinder. Safe, reusable and accurate. Attaches to bottle using magnetic strip. We have one and its been so much better than memory or turning on the cooker ring and finding it has 'stopped'. Here is a place we got one from but there will be others on eBay. Take a look

Once back in Australia in NSW when we were not sure if the gas in our hired van was about to run out, a guy at the site showed us how you could take the bottle out, put it in a kettle drum of cold water and see the level defined by warm and cold on the outside of the gas bottle, it sort of worked but boy how complicated, this handy gadget is so much easier.

2016 Update: Many of the modern light weight bottles now have a red / green indicator on the top, may be worth using as well assuming you can get to see it

2020 Update: Light weight bottles withdrawn, dangerous indeed we were woken at 2am by the carbon monoxide alarm when camping at the site at Brighton, very frightening, now safely replaced, you cannot get them any more
